Note to MacOS Users

Due to error or negligence, World-Wide Web browsers for MacOS do not properly display Old Norse characters Eth (Þ/þ), Thorn (Ð/ð), and long "y" (Ý/ý), even though these characters exist in the TrueType fonts that come with MacOS. You may see "fi" or "fl" ligatures, brackets, or daggers instead of these characters.

To get around this problem, we have created "rearranged" versions of several TrueType fonts available for downloading. They can be used with all of our Old Norse pages, as well as other sites' Old English pages. They are safe for use with Web pages created in English and most other Western European languages. We do not recommend them for word-processing. Apple Computer remains the copyright holder of these fonts, and the use of these fonts are limited by MacOS licensing agreement.

To use these fonts, download them from our FTP site at

ftp://server.fhp.uoregon.edu/Norse/

or from the list below, decode them (we recommend StuffIt Expander), and install them in your Fonts folder (System 7.0 users need to install them into the System suitcase. System 6.0.x users need to use the Font/DA Mover.); restart your browser; and then change the font settings in your browser's preferences. Your browser's "encoding" setting must be set to ISO-8859-1, which is the default setting.

For more information and links to other fonts, see the Old English Pages, especially the Fonts page, put together by Catherine N. Ball at Georgetown University.

Old Norse TrueType Fonts for MacOS

All of our Old Norse TrueType Fonts for MacOS begin with "ON," for "Old Norse." They are compressed with DropStuff and encoded with BinHex.
